Hey what’s up guys, your man Nick here.

A question I often get asked is about hamstring tears and specifically what the risks are and who is at risk. Typically, a lot of field or court sport athletes tend to be at risk of a hamstring tear. Why? because the risk factors involved are in a centric contraction, a forceful one. What is an eccentric contraction? You typically find it in sprinting, kicking high, speed running, rapid changes in the direction, acceleration, deceleration.

Now what’s actually happening during those movements and the hamstring is placed at a greater rate of stretch than what it can tolerate, or it can’t tolerate load at the length that it’s reaching and it happens all the time. Those are the risk factors and we should be doing what we can to avoid them. Which is actually another question that needs answering altogether. I’ll catch you guys next time.
